Health unit reports 24 new COVID-19 cases

Eleven of the cases tied to Valard East-West Tie project, five are at the Thunder Bay District Jail and two more are at the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre.

THUNDER BAY – Three separate outbreaks have fueled a massive surge in COVID-19 cases in the Thunder Bay District.

The Thunder Bay District Health Unit on Tuesday announced 24 new cases, 11 of which stem from an outbreak at the Valard East-West Tie project near Marathon. Another five are tied to an outbreak at the Thunder Bay District Jail, while two more are considered part of an outbreak at the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre.

Five more are considered close contact and one is because of travel outside of Northwestern Ontario.

Thirteen of the cases reside in Thunder Bay and surrounding areas.

The latest cases mean there are 92 active in the district, the most since Christmas Eve, and brings the total number of cases since the pandemic began to 756.

The 24 new cases are the second-highest single-day total in the District of Thunder Bay, trailing only the 33 cases announced on Nov. 29.

Seven cases were considered resolved overnight, bringing the total number of resolved cases to 638. There have been 26 deaths attributed to COVID-19 in the health unit’s catchment area since the pandemic began.
