Health unit reports 56 new COVID-19 cases

Fifty-one of the single-day record high cases are related to outbreaks at both the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre and the Thunder Bay District Jail.

THUNDER BAY – A record single-day high 56 COVID-19 cases have been reported by the Thunder Bay District Health Unit.

Forty-three of the cases are due to an outbreak at the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre, with eight more attached to the Thunder Bay District Jail.

One case is tied to the Valard East-West Tie project, with three more considered close contact and the remaining case pending.

The previous record for cases announced in a single day was 33, on Nov. 29.

The total number of cases in the Thunder Bay District since the pandemic began is 811.

According to a corrections union official, all the cases at the correctional centre involve inmates.
