THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay District Health Unit reported nine new cases of COVID-19 Saturday, with an outbreak in Long Lake #58 First Nation fueling a rebound in active case numbers.
Six of the new cases involved a district First Nation, while three others were in a district community, and none were reported in the Thunder Bay area.
Eight were considered a result of close contact with a previously identified case, while an exposure category for the ninth was still pending.
Long Lake #58 reported Friday there were 22 active cases in the community, which neighbours Longlac.
That accounts for over half of the health unit’s total active cases count of 42 reported on Saturday – the highest that figure has reached since May 6.
The health unit reported one new COVID-19 hospitalization, with a total of five district residents in hospital with the virus. None were in the Intensive Care Unit.
One previously identified case also screened positive for a COVID-19 variant of concern, bringing the total number detected in the TBDHU to 96.
