THUNDER BAY -- The Thunder Bay District Health Unit says another person has died as a result of COVID-19, bringing the region's total deaths to 32 since the pandemic began.

The health unit on Thursday announced a record-high 61 COVID-19 cases, upping its total number of active cases to another single-day record, the region sitting at 397 active cases.

There have been 298 cases announced over the past seven days, which works out to about 217 cases per 100,000 people.

Since last March 27, when the first case was announced in Thunder Bay, there have been 1,795 cases announced by the health unit. Of those, 1,366 are considered resolved.

Of the latest cases, 52 are considered to reside in Thunder Bay and surrounding areas, five were in First Nations communities and four live in district communities.

Thirty of the new cases are considered close contacts, while 23 are pending and one is related to an outbreak at the Thunder Bay District Jail.

Seven additional cases have no known exposure category. There have been 40 such cases over the past seven days.

Since the pandemic began, 1,396 of the district's confirmed cases have come from close contact and outbreaks. An additional 319 have no known exposure and 50 are from travel outside of Northwestern Ontario. Thirty remain in the pending category.

A total of 1.1 per cent of the 138,533 tests conducted since have proven positive, though it does not appear the latest case numbers are included in that figure.
