Business was allegedly falsely telling customers it could refuse the cards as a COVID-19 prevention measure.

THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay District Health Unit says it has never told any business in the city that it's OK to refuse an Indian status card as a COVID-19 prevention measure.

The health unit on Saturday, in a series of tweets, said it had received information on Friday that a business in the city, which it did not name, had been refusing to accept the cards on that basis, saying they'd been told to do so by the health unit.

“Refusing to accept cards or identification is not a recognized COVID prevention measure and TBDHU has certainly never told any business to refuse status card,” the health unit said.

“TBDHU condemns all forms of racism, including the refusal to recognize treaty rights.”
