THUNDER BAY -- The Thunder Bay District Health Unit says there were 40 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday.

The health unit also said there were 49 cases now considered resolved, leaving 437 active cases in the region, nine fewer than on Saturday.

Sixteen of the cases are considered household contact, with an additional 11 in the close contact category. One of the 40 cases is related to an outbreak at the Walford, a senior's home on the city's north side, where there have been 21 cases over the past five days.

Of the new cases, 39 reside in Thunder Bay and surrounding areas and one hails from a district community.

The district has had 2,339 cases since the pandemic began, a record 727 of them in March alone. Thunder Bay has been over 400 active cases for the past eight straight reporting days.
