THUNDER BAY – Residents of the Thunder Bay District should avoid travel outside of northwestern Ontario, public health authorities advise.

In a statement issued Monday evening, the Thunder Bay District Health Unit strongly advised residents to avoid non-essential travel outside of the region, and to self-isolate for 14 days upon their return if they do so.

“With the rise in case numbers in many jurisdictions, travel is not advisable and should be for urgent or essential reasons only," said medical officer of health Dr. Janet DeMille. "Hosting visitors from other areas is also not advisable and should be limited to essential reasons.”

Those returning from travel outside the region should avoid interactions with anyone outside of their household during their 14-day isolation period, and carefully monitor for COVID-19 symptoms, the health unit said.

If symptoms develop, residents should immediately arrange to get tested, and members of their household should also self-isolate. More details are available by visiting the health unit’s website or contacting them at (807) 625-5900 or toll-free at 1-888-294-6630 .

Essential workers should follow their employer's policies on whether to return to work during those 14 days, the health unit said.

The guidance comes as the district experiences a surge in COVID-19 cases, with over 100 announced in just over two weeks.
