THUNDER BAY — It will take until late next year to learn the outcome of Police Services Act charges against three police officers involved in the Stacy DeBungee death investigation.

All three are charged with neglect of duty, and two of them are also charged with discreditable conduct.

The body of 41-year-old DeBungee, from Rainy River First Nations, was found in the McIntyre River in October 2015.

The Thunder Bay Police Service determined early on that his death was non-criminal.

After a complaint from DeBungee's family, the Office of the Independent Police Review Director concluded that important leads in the case were ignored, and that racism may have influenced how the investigation was conducted.

The hearing into the Police Act charges will begin May 30, 2022, and will continue over a series of dates before concluding in late September.
