Hearing ordered for police officers accused of assault, theft

A hearing has been ordered into allegations that local police officers assaulted and stole from a man they were arresting.

A hearing has been ordered into allegations that local police officers assaulted and stole from a man they were arresting.

The office of the Independent Police Review Director conducted an investigation based on the allegations of a 44-year-old local man.

The man says that officers with the Thunder Bay Police Service committed assault and stole money from him during an arrest. That arrest was the result of a Sept. 7, 2011 drug investigation.

The man who made the allegations was not charged as a result of further investigation by the officers.

The Independent Police Review says while the assault and theft are not substantial, it has directed the chief of police to order a hearing into the circumstances that led to the arrest.

Three officers each face a single count of misconduct by unlawful or unnecessary exercise of authority, and one count of discreditable conduct under the Police Services Act.

Det. William Wowchuck, Det.-Const. Ron Popowich and Det.-Const. Brad Bernst will remain on active duty.

A date for the hearing has not been determined.
