Hearst hunters fined $10,000 for shooting down road

HEARST, Ont. - Two men from Northern Ontario have been fined $5,000 each from careless hunting charges in October 2019.

According to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, the two men from Hearst, Ont. pleaded guilty to careless use of firearm.

Justice of the peace, Shiree Scibner, heard the case in Kenora on March 4, 2020. The two men were found guilty and fined $5,000 each and received a five-year hunting license suspension.

Both men will have to complete the Ontario Hunter Education course before being permitted to purchase another hunting license.

The incident took place on Oct. 29, 2019 near the town of Nestor Falls. Conservation officers were conducting a whitetail deer decoy operation, which was set up on a commonly used forestry road.

Traffic was controlled in the area during the operation.

A vehicle stopped on the road and both of the accused exited and shot at the decoy down the road.

The MNRF is reminding hunters that firing down a road is both dangerous and illegal.
