For the second time in about a week, a home on Manitou Street has gone up in flames.
Firefighters with the Thunder Bay Fire and Rescue responded to large flames and smokes at the back of the home just after noon on Monday. Firefighters visited the same home about a week ago for a fire that started on the top floor.
Cal Jalbert, who lives on the top floor of the building, has lived at the home for about five months. He said the first fire happened because of a lamp, but he had no idea what would have caused the fire that engulfed the back of his house.
“I’m not doing well,” Jalbert said.
“The first fire was started because of a lamp that was bad enough for the first week, now a fire in the backyard. That’s a little suspicious to me.”
About three people were evacuated with no injuries reported.
Firefighters then went back into the home and rescued Jalbert’s kittens.
Platoon chief Kim Hutch said the home received extensive damage to the back as well as all three floors of the house.
He said the fire started outside and moved up the side of the building and went into the third floor.
“We got control of the fire on the third floor quickly,” Hutch said.
“The fire is out and everything is under control, but it will be investigated by our investigation division. There’s heavy damage in the back. The back porch is completely burned off.”
He said he didn’t know if there was a connection between the two fires.
