Highway 11/17 collision claims life of 78-year-old man

A 78-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene of a collision on Highway 11/17 involving a pickup truck and two tractor-trailers.

SHUNIAH, Ont. - A collision on Highway 11/17 involving a pickup truck and two tractor-trailers has claimed life of 78-year-old man.

Ontario Provincial Police, Superior North EMS, and Shuniah Fire responded to the collision on Sunday at approximately 1 p.m. on Highway 11/17 just east of Pearl Road 5.

Based on a preliminary investigation by the OPP Traffic Collision Investigators, the 78-year-old driver of an eastbound pickup truck crossed the centre line and collided with a westbound tractor-trailer. A second collision then occurred between the pickup truck and another tractor-trailer.

The driver of the pickup was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no other occupants in the vehicle and all the occupants of the tractor-trailers were not injured.

The name of the driver is being withheld pending the notification of next of kin. The collision closed the highway for approximately six hours.

The investigation is ongoing.
