UPDATED: Highway 17 closed between Terrace Bay and Marathon

A long stretch of Highway 11 was also closed

THUNDER BAY — A weather system that dumped 20 centimetres of snow in areas north of Thunder Bay by early Monday morning has disrupted travel on both Highway 17 and Highway 11.

Ontario 511 first reported that Highway 17 was closed between Terrace Bay and Marathon because of poor driving conditions.

Traffic control is in place.

Highway 11 was subsequently closed east of Geraldton.

At about 12:40 p.m., Ontario 511 reported that Highway 11 was then closed from Nipigon to Hearst, but it also posted another notice showing the closure was from Beardmore to Hearst. It's not clear why two separate notices were posted.

Single-lane closures were also reported earlier Monday due to collisions or disabled vehicles at other sections of Highway 11 and Highway 17.

Environment Canada snowfall warnings remained in effect for the north shore of Lake Superior.

Meteorologist  Steven Flisfeder said about 10 centimetres was measured at some locations around the city by early morning, but areas farther outside Thunder Bay – especially to the north – received 15 to 20 centimetres.
