WAWA, Ont. - A four-hour closure of Highway 17 along the north shore on Thursday was the result of a chemical spill.
According to a media release issued by the Ontario Provincial Police Friday afternoon, officers with the Superior East Detachment responded to a chemical spill on Highway 17 near Rabbit Blanket Lake.
Police said a commercial vehicle took evasive action to avoid a collision, resulting in an onboard tote to rupture, leaking the contents onto the roadway.
The chemical was determined to be pesticide.
The Ministry of the Environment was advised and a hazardous materials team attended the scene.
The incident took place just before 5 p.m. and the highway was reopened by 9 p.m.
