Highway 590 detours remain as roadwork continues (4 photos)

Repairs to a section of Highway 590 damaged by a washout last month are expected to be complete next week but scheduled roadwork to replace a culvert is still causing detours.

THUNDER BAY - A washout that closed a section of Highway 590 for nearly three weeks is expected to reopen early next week, but traffic disruptions remain for motorists as a scheduled construction project is ongoing.

A section of Highway 590 between Adrian Lake Road and Boreal Timber Road has been closed since June 24 following heavy rainfall in the area that caused a washout and significant damage to the roadway.

The Ministry of Transportation indicated the road could be closed for up to three weeks as crews worked to repair the damage.

A MTO spokesperson said grading work should be completed this weekend and the highway will be open to traffic by next week.

“We apologize for the inconvenience and urge motorists to schedule their travel to minimize any delays,” a MTO spokesperson said. “Motorists are reminded to obey and follow all traffic signage and flag persons for the safety of both workers and drivers. For the latest information on highway closures and construction, the public can call 511, MTO’s Road Information Line or check www.511on.ca for updates.”

However, a scheduled replacement of a culvert on Highway 590 at Cedar Creek just west of Highway 595 and Sovereign Road has resulted in more detours for motorists.

Detours are posted along Highway 595 and Cronk Road.

Signs posted near the worksite say the road will be closed until Aug. 16, though the MTO said in a statement that work will be completed this fall.

Residents in the area said the road work and detours have added between 15 and 20 minutes to their commute.
