Highway 61 closure hours extended

Onset of winter weather means crews will have additional time in late October and early November to complete the restoration project.

Highway 61 work continues into November.

THUNDER BAY – As winter weather descends on Thunder Bay, construction workers on Highway 61 plan to close the highway for large chunks of the final weekend in October and the first weekend in November.

According to a public notice, the highway between Neebing Avenue and Princess Street and Broadway Avenue will close on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. and will reopen on Monday, Oct. 29 at 6:30 a.m. The scenario will repeat itself from Nov. 3 to Nov. 5.

“The highway closures are necessary to ensure the safety of road users and workers while construction work is under way,” the notice reads.

“We apologize for the inconvenience and urge motorists to schedule their travel to minimize any delays.”

Restoration work on several bridges began on June 4 and was scheduled to wrap up in November. The affected area of the highway has been closed nightly between 10 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. Detours have rerouted traffic along Broadway Avenue during the closures.
