THUNDER BAY – Motorists who regularly use Highway 61 south of the airport will need a new route starting Thursday night.

The Ministry of Transportation on Wednesday announced a full highway closure between Neebing Avenue and Princess Street and Broadway Avenue, from 10 p.m. on Thursday until 6 a.m. on Monday.

The closure is necessary to allow workers to complete repairs to an overpass, damaged in a collision last fall.

“We apologize for the inconvenience and urge motorists to schedule their travel to minimize any delays. Motorists are reminded to obey and follow all traffic signage and flag persons for the safety of both workers and drivers.”

A 24-year-old Atikokan man faces charges in the incident, including criminal negligence, failing to remain at the scene and failure to report damages to a property on a highway.

The MTO says detour signs will be in place.
