Highway 61 completion date delayed (2 photos)

The completion date for overpass repair work on Highway 61 won't be until spring 2019.

THUNDER BAY -- The overpass repair work on Highway 61 by the airport won't be complete until 2019.

The Ministry of Transportation on Thursday confirmed Toronto Zenith will have to return in the spring to complete the job.

The project's most recent completion date was supposed to be Nov. 30, but the company won't meet that timeline and will continue to work for the next three weeks and come back again next spring to finish the repairs.

Regular night-time closures will continue until Dec. 20.

At that time, the temporary concrete barriers along the southbound lane will be removed and the speed limit will return to 90-kilometres-an-hour over the winter months.

An MTO spokeswoman noted there were financial penalties built into the contract in the event the work wasn't finished this year.

Those penalties are now being reviewed. This is the third major highway project in Thunder Bay this decade which hasn't been completed on time before winter set in.
