SHUNIAH - Crews with Shuniah Fire and Emergency Services were kept busy on Sunday with multiple calls involving vehicle collisions on area roads.

Just before 10 a.m. Shuniah fire crews responded to a collision between two transport trucks at the intersection of Highway 11/17 and Highway 587.

Shuniah Fire and Emergency Services Chief, Blair Arthur, said the collision closed the west bound lane of the highway for several hours.

“One of the problems was, one of the fuel tanks were ruptured on one of the trucks, so there was quite a substantial fuel, oil leak,” Arthur said. “It was contained and the highway was just opened not long ago. We stayed on scene, securing the scene with the OPP.”

According to Arthur, there were no substantial injuries and no one required hospitalization.

Shuniah crews were also called to a single vehicle rollover just after 1 p.m. on highway 527 near Kingfisher Lake. OPP and EMS also responded to the call.

“We were cancelled on it because they could not find the driver,” Arthur said. “When the police and ambulance arrived, there was no occupant.”

Officials with OPP were not immediately available to comment on either incident.

Blair added that Sunday was busier than normal for the fire service in the Muncipality of Shuniah, primarily due to the weather on Saturday.

“With the weekend that we had, we had pretty much the entire municipality without power,” Arthur said. “We’ve had a lot of calls for trees down, trees on fire, transformers on fire, medical issues, a little bit busier than normal.”
