GREENSTONE, Ont. -- Fire destroyed a historic Longlac church that was abandoned more than 20 years ago.

The historic Catholic Church of the Infant Jesus, a prominent landmark on Long Lake, was burned to the ground Wednesday.

The church was originally founded in 1885 but the original building met a similar fate in 1948 when it was lost to fire. A new parish was subsequently built the following year as a Jesuit mission to serve Longlac and the nearby First Nations communities.

The church had been closed in 1997 but Long Lake 58 First Nation had been attempting to acquire funding to restore the church.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
