DULUTH, Minn. — A decommissioned World War ll - era tugboat is sinking at its slip in the Duluth harbour.

Various American media sources report that the U.S. Coast Guard received a report Monday morning that the Lake Superior was listing after taking on water.

A photo posted on Facebook showed her stern already submerged.

Pumps were brought in to try to keep the boat afloat.

The 35-metre tug was built in 1943 for the U.S. Army, and was reportedly used during the Allied landing in Normandy the following year.

According to an ad posted for a private owner who had listed it for sale about 20 years ago, it has 15 berths, a stainless steel galley, oak and mahogany wood and brass fixtures.

The Lake Superior was previously used as a floating museum.

In Thunder Bay, another historic tug – the James Whalen – was found taking on water in April 2021 at its dock at the Kaministiquia River Heritage Park.
