In the dozen years Doug Powell has lived on Secord Streets he’s seen countless collisions.
The most recent one was Tuesday afternoon.
Powell said he was out front of his house near the corner of Secord and Dufferin as a woman in a Subaru drove northbound on his street. He then saw a woman in a Chrysler Intrepid run the stop sign and T-bone the Subaru.
“She slammed into the low gear and took off,” Powell said as emergency crews cleaned up the scene.
“The car made it to the next corner and she bailed out of the car and started running.”
He immediately called 911, which he says emergency crews responded almost instantaneously, to check on the driver of the Subaru.
Powell wasn’t sure which way the woman in the Intrepid ran after stopping near Ambrose Street.
“I did see her face. She was terrified as she was laying rubber out of here,” he said.
Officials with the Thunder Bay Police Service later announced that they had found the suspect, who is identified only as a 37-year-old woman. The woman was arrested on outstanding warrants, and now faces charges of failing to remain at the scene of a collision, driving without a licence and failing to stop at a stop sign.
Powell said a lot of collisions he sees at the intersection could be avoided if the city installed a four-way stop.
“Then at least somebody’s going to stop,” he said. “(Without a four-way stop sign) it’s going to come to the point where somebody’s going to get killed here.”
Police say more charges are pending following an investigation.
The suspect will remain in custody until after a court appearance scheduled for Wednesday.
