A pet hoarding situation on the city's south side doesn't appear to be as dire as officials thought.
About a dozen cats and dogs were taken from a home on Dease Street last week, five of which had to be put down. It was initially thought that up to 30 more animals were living at the house and could be in danger.
But a further investigation by the Thunder Bay and District Humane Society on Wednesday found another dozen or so cats living at the home are doing well.
"He's got food, he's got water he actually cooks for them," said Humane Society executive director Glen Wilson.
"The animals are probably the best taken care of in the house."
The animals that were taken were mainly strays living in in a van on the property.
Wilson said the main issue with the home is related to health and safety for the owner and it's likely the animals are in no danger. An officer with the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is currently assessing the home.
"We'll probably find out in the next day or two what the next step would be," Wilson said.
