A much-loved icon in Thunder Bay is celebrating it's 100th birthday this weekend.

The Finlandia Club officially turned 100 years old at the end of March but is having a summer festival as its party. The celebration opened to the public Friday afternoon with a traditional play done in the Finnish language. Friday evening, an American Finnish reggae band will be performing. Saturday is the main event with an open market, as well as a performance by popular Finnish musician Jukka Kuoppamaki. Event chair Margit Peura said people seem to be looking forward to all the events.

Peura said this is the first time members of the Finlandia Club have attempted such a large event and she hopes the community will help support Finnish history in Thunder Bay. The celebration closes on Sunday night with a concert at St. Paul's United Church.
