THUNDER BAY — Students at Hammarskjold High School were let out of class at the end of the school day Tuesday in what a Lakehead Public Schools spokesperson described as a "normal dismissal."

A hold-and-secure protocol had been in place at the school throughout the day, meaning the doors were kept locked, because of an unspecified safety concern.

Police officers were present at the school through the day as well.

A police spokesperson said late Tuesday afternoon that nothing unusual occurred at Hammarskjold during hold-and-secure, and that unless police receive new information "that's where it will end."

"The concern was for today," Constable Julie Tilbury said, adding that at this time officers are not expected to return to the school on Wednesday.

The doors had been locked in the morning, but classes continued at the high school.

Hold-and-secure was also imposed during the morning only at several other north-side schools as a precaution.

Thunder Bay Police said only that they were investigating "a safety concern" at Hammarskjold.

"Unconfirmed information has been received over the weekend that is being investigated," a brief statement said.

Police asked  anyone with knowledge of "any safety concern" involving Hammarskjold to contact them.

Late Tuesday, Lakehead Public Schools confirmed that the hold-and-secure protocol will not be in place at the high school on Wednesday.

"The school will be open and running as per usual," a statement said.
