THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre plans to close its dedicated COVID-19 unit.

Hospital officials have called a Wednesday news conference to provide more details, noting the surgical beds can be better utilized elsewhere.

The unit, which opened in April, was created to create an isolated space for any potential influx of COVID-19 patients. Those with the virus, or suspected to have it, were treated in the dedicated unit.

It was never at capacity and the number of beds was actually downsized from 36 to 15 in May.

On Monday the Thunder Bay District Health Unit declared there were no known active cases of the cornavirus in its catchment area.
