Hospital OK despite plasma centre closure, doctor says

The chief of staff at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Center is reassuring the public that the closure of the plasma centre will have no impact on patient services at the hospital.

The chief of staff at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Center is reassuring the public that the closure of the plasma centre will have no impact on patient services at the hospital.

Doctor George Derbyshire said all of their blood products come from Winnipeg, and says local access to high quality and needed materials will continue.

He added that officials at Canadian Blood Services are correct in their assertion that the demand for plasma has been declining for years.

Union leaders have accused the agency of importing plasma from the U.S., which they say could have health risks because Americans are paid for their blood donations.

Derbyshire says he's not sure where their Winnipeg plasma products originate from, but says none of their doctors have ever raised concerns about it.
