THUNDER BAY – The process for COVID-19 testing in Thunder Bay is changing, with the regional hospital taking over responsibility for scheduling appointments from the district health unit.

The Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre and Thunder Bay District Health Unit announced the shift in a joint release Friday, saying it would streamline the testing process and allow the health unit to focus on other work responding to the pandemic.

As of Monday, residents will contact the hospital at (807) 935-8100 to schedule tests.

“Our hospital is committed to ensuring that residents who call us to schedule a COVID-19 test receive the same exceptional service that they’ve come to expect from the [health unit],” said hospital CEO Jean Bartkowiak.

The COVID-19 assessment centre on site at the hospital has shouldered much of the responsibility for performing tests on local residents, while paramedics with Superior North EMS have worked with the health unit to offer mobile testing.

While the contact for testing has changed, residents can continue to contact the health unit with questions about COVID-19 symptoms, self-isolation and monitoring, or testing criteria. The agency can be reach at (807) 625-5900 or toll free at 1-888-294-6630.
