Hospital unions say they will fight health commercialization

Union representatives from hospitals across Ontario plan to roll out a new campaign against what they see as the commercialization of health care.
Union representatives from hospitals across Ontario plan to roll out a new campaign against what they see as the commercialization of health care.

That was one of the main issues presented and discussed at the Ontario Council of Hospital Unions meeting, which was held in Thunder Bay the past three days.

OCHU President Michael Hurley said if the government tenders out services, many of those services will be moved out of smaller communities and into larger cities.

He added that if patients have to travel to have certain procedures done, local rural communities will suffer.

The other major issue that was addressed at the 28th annual conference was cutbacks to the health-care system due to what participants called a lack of funding.
