One man is dead following an early morning house fire on the city’s south side.

Officials with the Thunder Bay Fire and Rescue say that fire crews were called to 438 Victoria Avenue around 4:30 a.m.

Firefighters were called to the scene after a passerby noticed smoke coming from the home.

Fire and Rescue Platoon Chief John Mill said firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the blaze.

“We found a male in the front room and an ambulance crew took him to the hospital,” Mill said, adding that they were unaware of the man’s condition at the time.

“We’re not sure what caused the fire at this point, but as soon as inspection is here they will go over the room and find out.”

Officials with the Thunder Bay Police Service later confirmed that a 39-year-old man had died as a result of the fire.

The Fire Marshall’s Office is now investigating the fire.

Firefighters say the fire was contained to the kitchen, with smoke damage throughout the house.
