THUNDER BAY -- There was a slight dip in new home construction around the city last month.

According to Canada Mortgage and Housing, 27 new home builds began during the month of October, down from 32 over the same time period last year. It's due mainly to a sharp decline in single-detached home starts. There were just 15 in October, compared to 26 in 2014.

However, the number of multi-unit homes doubled from six in 2014 to 12 this year.

Total year-to-date numbers are also up with 215 new housing starts in 2015 compared to 200 a year ago. CMHC market analyst Warren Philp said the six-month trend is also moving upward but the current economic landscape does not indicate further growth in the demand for housing.
