THUNDER BAY -- The Thunder Bay and District Humane Society will be able to pay for a portion of the vet bills it's facing from its two most recent dog rescues.

About $8,000 was raised in a pair of fundraising efforts this week to help dozens of dogs rescued two weeks ago from northern communities.

Co-ordinator Cassandra Nordal said more than $1,000 came from the auction of a Matt Murray hockey stick on eBay and the rest came from a cupcake sale.

“It went really well,” Nordal said. “We sold more than $6,500 worth of cupcakes, which is crazy because they were only $2 each; and with the hockey stick we ended with a final prize of $1,085.”

All the money raised will be used to cover a portion of the veterinary bills for the rescue dogs.

Nordal said there isn’t enough to cover the entire cost, but the Humane Society plans to do more fundraising.

“We are still hoping to raise more money, especially with the dogs because their food intake has increased,” Nordal said.

The Thunder Bay Humane Society is hosting a Saint Patrick's Day adoption fair on March 17 at Victoriaville Mall.
