Humane Society receives big donation

The Thunder Bay and District Humane Society received a year's supply of dog food this holiday season.

THUNDER BAY — Santa came early this giving season to drop off a huge donation to the Thunder Bay and District Humane Society.

Instead of his big shiny sled, he drove up to the door in a U-Haul full of a year’s supply of dog food.

Shawna Beaulieu, executive director of the humane society, told Newswatch the donation would allow the organization to allocate resources where they are needed such as preventative veterinary care, urgent veterinary care, building maintenance, and other supplies.

“We're immensely grateful that we are not going to have to worry at all about feeding our dogs for the next year thanks to this large donation of dog food for a year. That's 3,000 pounds of food and 6,000 meals, which is quite impactful,” Beaulieu said.

The donation was made by London business owner Keanu Adduono, who calls Thunder Bay his hometown. Adduono described himself as a "massive" animal lover.

“I know a lot of animals can't necessarily ask for help, and I figured it was my time to give,” Adduono said.

Beaulieu noted that the humane society has some large breed dogs available for adoption.

“Some of our dogs are long-term residents. We, at this point, are trying to find some foster homes that might be willing to give them a little bit of a break. Maybe a week during the holidays just to get out of the shelter and enjoy some time with the family socializing a little bit,” Beaulieu said.
