THUNDER BAY -The Thunder Bay District Humane Society has seen a record number of cat adoptions over the last few days.

This has relieved some capacity issues since last week's cat hoarding investigation that suddenly brought 70 cats into their care.

Since the beginning of last week, the humane society was severely overcrowded with cats after a series of investigations led to the rescue of 70 neglected felines.

Executive director of Thunder Bay District Humane Society Melanie Blanchette said they were already at full capacity due to seasonal births, but the intake of rescues put them in a dire need for space.

After making an announcement about the crisis, the humane society slashed their adoption fees down to a quarter of the regular price. And almost immediately, the community stepped up to the plate.

“In about a four day span we did a record number of adoptions,” Blanchette said.

“We saw over 35 adoptions in about four days and that’s usually a number that we do in about four months.”

It wasn't just adoptions that increased. Blanchette said there was an outpour of donations as well, but despite the record number of adoptions, the humane society is still at high capacity.

“The unfortunate thing is because of the situation with the investigation cats, we can’t actually put those animals up for adoption until those investigations are concluded,” she said.

Blanchette said the humane society will be pursuing charges but the investigation may take anywhere from one to three months. Many of the rescued cats still require medical attention.

She added that the humane society is not government funded and rely heavily on community donations.
