PetSmart Charities of Canada Supports new Thunder Bay & District Humane Society Spay/Neuter Services
Thunder Bay, ON (December 23, 2015) – The Thunder Bay & District Humane Society is pleased to announce that the organization is the recipient of a $316,778 grant from PetSmart Charities of Canada that will support a new Spay/Neuter Clinic in Thunder Bay. Earlier this year, the Thunder Bay & District Humane Society launched the Take the Lead Campaign to raise funds to construct the facility that will be located at 1535 Rosslyn Road. Support announced today from PetSmart Charities of Canada will cover the cost of all of the surgical equipment and start up consumables for the facility.
“Through the PetSmart Charities of Canada grants, we’ve seen the benefit of similar spay and neuter facilities in communities across Canada to help curb pet overpopulation,” said John DeFranco, president, PetSmart Charities of Canada. “We’re thrilled to be able to support the Thunder Bay community with necessary services that provide a better life for pets.”
The new Spay and Neuter Clinic will provide Animal Welfare services at a fraction of market cost to the District of Thunder Bay and Northwestern Ontario, including First Nation communities. With a focus on cats and dogs, the facility will be open to the public and will be fully staffed with veterinarians, technicians, and cutting-edge technology.
“The Thunder Bay & District Humane Society is very grateful for the support from PetSmart Charities of Canada;” says Board of Directors 1st Vice President, Sue Rob. “The region continues to face a pet overpopulation crisis due to careless pet ownership and access to affordable services. The clinic services will help save the lives of animals and reduce the number of pets that suffer and are abandoned.”
The new Spay/Neuter Clinic will ensure that all dogs and cats are sterilized before adoption from the Thunder Bay & District Humane Society. It is projected that the clinic will conduct 20-25 procedures a day as well as spay and neuter all cats and dogs entering the Thunder Bay & District Humane Society. Continues Rob; “The Humane Society is still seeking support of $125,000.00 from the community to ensure this facility becomes a reality."
