THUNDER BAY – A 40-year-old Hurkett man has been charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle.
Thunder Bay police, in a release issued Tuesday morning, said police were conducting a RIDE check on Algoma Street near Park Avenue early Tuesday morning.
During the RIDE check, a driver of an SUV approached officers just before 2:45 a.m. Officers observed signs that the driver was impaired, and noticed paraphernalia consistent with drug consumption in plain view.
An investigation revealed the driver’s licence was suspended, and he was wanted on outstanding warrants by another police service.
The driver failed a standardized field sobriety test and was arrested. Further tests by a drug recognition expert determined the driver was impaired by drug.
The 40-year-old Hurkett, Ont. man is charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle and breach of recognizance.
He is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.
He is also charged under the Highway Traffic Act for driving while under suspension.
