THUNDER BAY -- The city's proposed event centre is expected to be a topic of conversation in the House of Commons on Monday.

MP Bruce Hyer (Green, Thunder Bay-Superior North) asked Infrastructure Minister Denis Lebel during Question Period when the government will start supporting municipal governments on funding key infrastructure projects, specifically identifying the event centre.

"Our cities have crumbling infrastructure. We are the only G20 country with no national housing strategy. The Feds have downloaded for decades onto the provinces and the provinces onto the municipalities," the question reads.

"When will the Conservatives stop subsidizing under-taxed multinational corporations like Big Oil, and start working with mayors to invest in critical infrastructure like public transit, municipal housing, and important projects like the proposed Event Centre in Thunder Bay?"

Lebel said the federal government has already been a partner with provinces and municipalities.

"That's precisely what we're doing. We have the longest-term and largest infrastructure program in the country, together with the provincies and municipalities and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities was involved at every step of the way," Lebel said.

"Seventy-five billion dollars will be invested over 10 years in our infrastructure."
