THUNDER BAY — The winner of the Friends of the Thunder Bay Public Library's monthly 50/50 draw is a big step closer to buying a house.

City resident Meagan Beardy held the winning ticket in the April draw, which brings her a windfall of $23,400.

"I never imagined I'd win," she said when she received the news Monday. "I am glad to be a part of helping the library, and I'm saving for a down payment on a house, so this will help a lot."

The Friends of the Library have now awarded a cumulative total of almost $161,000 in grand prizes and early-bird prizes.

"With the proceeds now going to the new children's area at Waverley, we will be helping to create a transformative space for families, helping kids fall in love with reading, and giving parents a place to connect," said Fran Duke, the group's president.

Tickets for the May draw are now on sale.
