LAC SEUL — Camp Molly is a four-day opportunity for young women to train to become firefighters.

Last month, it was held in Lac Seul and 18-year-old Montana Geekie attended the camp all the way from Brandon, Man.

“My parents work in Lac Seul, and my mom actually reached out and told me to come out for this camp and told me it'd be very good for my resumes," she said.

“I'm really on the paramedic and fire field and I'm trying to get into that for school. So, I was very pumped for this.”

Geekie was nervous going in, and left pleasantly surprised.

“I was kind of scared. Not that I couldn't do it, I know I could do it. I was putting faith in myself," she said.

“I came out stronger than I was going in, I felt so encouraged and empowered. I was challenged and it was a great feeling to have.

“I saw myself in a different way that I didn't think I could see myself."

Around 20 girls came out to the camp, Geekie said.

“It's a great experience for honestly anything – the strength component to it. Getting yourself ready for any type of job, being at the gym and being physically and mentally active.

"It gives a mental component, too, to help people out and to be prepared for anything that comes to you — you know, just being challenged.”

Geekie said she is leaning more towards the paramedic side, but the camp was insightful nonetheless.

“When I went to the do the fire stuff, I came out knowing I could do it. I didn't know if I could wear all that stuff and go into a fire and save people like that.

“Once I came out, I was like, I can do this, I want to do this, and I am prepared to do this. I want to be prepared to do this. It honestly gave me a big taste of how it really is in the fire field,” she said.

Never be afraid to do something if you’re unsure you’ll succeed, Geekie said.

“Always give it your all and never take the chances you get for granted."
