THUNDER BAY - People living near Whitefish River are being asked to exercise caution as ice-jamming occurring may cause sudden flooding.

The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority has issued a flood outlook statement for the Township of O’Connor and the Township of Gillies because of Ice-jamming on the Whitefish River in the area of Harstone Road.

As the ice begins to break up during the spring thaw, it can collect and build in waterways, which can cause water levels to rise without warning. People living near the Whitefish River should exercise caution until the ice dissipates.

A similar flood outlook was issued last year. The Whitefish River has breached it's banks in the past, most recently in July 2015 after heavy rains, which lead to at least 10 homes experiencing flooding damage.

The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority issues flood outlook statements to provide early warning of potential flooding. It will continue to monitor conditions and provide any additional flood statements or warnings if required.
