THUNDER BAY – Ice-breaking operations could begin on Lake Superior in the Thunder Bay area as early as Tuesday.

The annual joint Canadian and United States Coast Guard operation is conducted to open up the waterway for commercial shipping to restart.
recreational users of the ice, including pedestrians, fishers, snowmobilers and all-terrain vehicle operators, are warned to leave the ice during the ice-breaking work. They’re also reminded ice will remain unstable after the icebreaker has left the region.

The U.S. Coast Guard cutter Alder has been assigned to provide ice-breaking services in 2018.
