THUNDER BAY — The Canadian Coast Guard says icebreaking operations have started in the Thunder Bay area, and are expected to continue into January.

The United States Coast Guard icebreaking tug Katmai Bay arrived in Thunder Bay on Monday to work around local grain terminals but has since returned to her home port of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.

A spokesperson for Fisheries and Oceans Canada says either a US Coast Guard cutter or a Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker will be assigned to Thunder Bay on an as-needed basis in the coming weeks.

Operations will continue until the Sault Ste. Marie locks close for the winter on Jan. 15, 2020.
