Ignace council accepts mayor’s mulligan, reject previous resignation

A confusing situation in Ignace has finally come to a conclusion, and the vacant mayor’s position will be filled by the man who resigned from that position earlier this year.

A confusing situation in Ignace has finally come to a conclusion, and the vacant mayor’s position will be filled by the man who resigned from that position earlier this year.

In late January, Lee Kennard resigned from his position as the Mayor of Ignace. But a few days later Kennard attempted to withdraw that resignation.

The result has been a lengthy debate over the town's next move, which was decided during Thursday night's council meeting.

About 70 people attended that special council meeting. Lee Kennard was elected to the mayor’s position in 2010 with 84 per cent of the vote.

But before any ruling was made, councillors were given a chance to voice their opinions on whether Kennard should be re-appointed.
Deputy Mayor, Larry Fraser, said Kennard should have taken a leave of absence as an alternative to quitting.

Council voted 3 to 1 to re-appoint Kennard as mayor.

Afterwards, Kennard was thankful for the public's continued endorsement.

Kennard said he still looks forward to rebuilding relationships and restoring any harm that has been caused in the confusion.
