THUNDER BAY – Ontario Provincial Police say a routine marine patrol led to impaired charges being laid against a 36-year-old Neebing man.
While patrolling on Aug. 5 on Shebandowan Lake, officers stopped a vessel to check for proper equipment and sobriety.
It was determined the vessel operator had been consuming alcoholic beverages, and he was subsequently arrested and returned to the detachment for further testing.
The accused was charged with operating while impaired – blood alcohol concentration 80 plus and operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs.
The accused is expected back in court on Sept. 10.
The OPP’s Northwest Region traffic incident management and enforcement team, along with conservation officers from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, have been conducting joint-enforcement marine patrols.
On Aug. 9 and Aug. 10 further patrols were conducted on Shebandowan Lake, Two Island Lake, Surprise Lake and One Island Lake, where a number of infractions were uncovered, including open liquor within a vessel, cannabis readily available, missing vessel safety equipment and depositing waste on public lands – for throwing beer cans in the lake.
It is Newswatch policy not to name people accused of crimes in which it is unlikely we will follow the case through to its conclusion in court.
