Impaired driver charged after crash

(THUNDER BAY, ON) – On Saturday, December 17, 2016 at approximately 7:22 pm, officers from the Thunder Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a two vehicle collision on Highway 11/17, between John Street and Red River Road.

The driver of a north bound Audi was struck from behind by the driver of a Volkswagen Jetta as that driver attempted to change lanes. There were no injuries reported.

Officers spoke to the driver of the Volkswagen Jetta and determined the driver had been consuming alcohol. The driver was transported to the detachment for further tests.

A 30-year-old Thunder Bay man was arrested and charged with:

-Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle, contrary to section 253(1)(a) of the Criminal Code,

-Operate a Motor Vehicle With Over 80 mgs of Alcohol contrary to section 253(1)(b) of the Criminal Code.

He will appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Thunder Bay on February 7, 2017, to answer to the charges.

The OPP are reminding motorists that there is no safe amount of alcohol consumption when driving. Anyone who suspects a driver that is driving while impaired is urged to call police by dialing 9-1-1 immediately.
