NIPIGON, Ont. - A two-vehicle collision in Lake Helen First Nation has resulted in an impaired driving charge against an Atikokan man.

Officers with the OPP Nipigon detachment responded to reports of a motor vehicle collision at approximately 10 a.m. on Saturday at the intersection of Highway 11 and Gas Road in Lake Helen First Nation.

According to OPP, a pickup truck collided with the rear of a car that was turning right from Highway 11 onto Gas Road.

There were no reports of injuries as a result of the collision, but officers on the scene detected the smell of alcohol coming from the driver of the pickup truck.

A roadside breath sample was obtained from the driver and was registered as a fail. He was then transported to the OPP detachment in Nipigon to undergo further testing.

Following an investigation, OPP charged a 29-year-old man from Atikokan with drive over 80 milligrams. He has been released on a promise to appear in court on Feb. 19 to answer to the charges.

OPP are reminding motorists that driving impaired by drugs or alcohol can result in license suspensions, fine, vehicle impoundment, criminal records, and increased insurance costs.
