THUNDER BAY -- A 40-year-old man, who had a suspended driver's licence, now also has drinking and driving charges.

A Thunder Bay Police Service news release said a patrolling officer on Red River Road on Friday recognized a man who was known to be a suspended driver while both were stopped at a red light at the High Street intersection.

A traffic stop was done on Algoma Street near Pearl Street, where the officer believed the driver to be impaired.

After the man was taken to the Balmoral Street police station, subsequent testing determined the driver was nearly three times over the legal blood alcohol concentration limit.

The man has been charged with impaired operation and driving with a blood alcohol level over .80 milligrams, and has since been released on a promise to appear for a future court date.
