THUNDER BAY — Ontario Provincial Police have released further details of a recent incident west of Thunder Bay which led to multiple charges against a Toronto-area man.
Officers responded on Oct. 26 at 5:30 a.m. to a report of a motor vehicle collision on Highway 11-17, just east of Shabaqua.
Police had also been told a firearm had been discharged, and that the driver of the vehicle had been stabbed with a needle.
OPP subsequently located a vehicle that had hit a rock cut, resulting in minor injuries to two occupants. The passenger was arrested and taken to hospital for further medical evaluation.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation, but 23-year-old Nathaniel Joshua Matthews of Brampton, Ont. faces multiple charges including:
- assault with a weapon
- discharge of a firearm in a reckless manner
- careless use of a firearm
- possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm
- possession of a prohibited device or ammunition
- failure to comply with a court's release order
Matthews was held in custody pending a bail hearing scheduled for Monday afternoon.
