THUNDER BAY — An abundance of health services aimed at Indigenous people permeate Thunder Bay and its surrounding areas, but knowing where they are and how to contact them still remains a question mark for some potential clients, program supporters say.
"There are lots of services, but not much awareness of them," Noojmawing Sookatagaing Ontario Health Team spokesman Ankush Mahajan said on Wednesday.
To increase awareness, the Thunder Bay-based agency is organizing a second information session to highlight service providers, similar to the one held in the city last fall.
"It's like a health fair," Mahajan said.
Mahajan said organizers want to build on the success of last year's event, which introduced some of the 300 attendees to some services they never knew existed.
"For example, Sioux Lookout First Nation Health Authority now has an office in Thunder Bay, and Dilico (Anishinabek Family Care) now has a walk-in clinic," Mahajan said.
"Many Indigenous organizations provide home care for their off-reserve members," he added.
Noojmawing Sookatagaing Ontario Health Team's health-services event is to take place May 1 at Thunder Bay's Victoria Inn.
Registration deadline is April 21. The health team can be reached by email at [email protected].
