GREENSTONE, Ont. – A two-year-old boy died in a fire at a Cyr Way residence in the Geraldton area on Thursday.

Five people, including two men and three children, escaped the residence, according to a friend of the family, but a two-year old boy did not.

The fire broke out around 8 p.m. Thursday night, he said.

A GoFundMe campaign established Friday afternoon to support the family had already exceeded its $2,000 goal about an hour later, according to the website.

The Municipality of Greenstone released few details on the fire in a statement issued Friday. The chief of its volunteer fire department was on scene and not immediately available for comment, according to a representative.

Two fire halls responded to a fire at a residential property within Greenstone’s Geraldton Ward Thursday, according to the release.

Ontario’s Office of the Fire Marshall has been contacted and will investigate.
